How to negotiate your salary

Anchor high, but anchor specifically

The first number anchors everything that follows. Name yours first and make it specific — "I’m targeting $115,000" lands differently than "somewhere in the $110–120k range." Specificity signals research, not posturing.

Justify with market data, not personal need

"I need more because of my mortgage" tells an employer nothing about your worth to them. Comparable-role data from SEEK, Glassdoor, or Levels.fyi gives the hiring manager a reason to move — and a number they can defend to their own boss.

Don’t stop at base salary

When base is genuinely fixed, total comp rarely is. A signing bonus, equity, an early performance review, or extra annual leave are real concessions that cost the company less than they’re worth to you. Ask for them by name.

Give them a yes they can deliver

The hiring manager often isn’t the final decision-maker. Hand them one specific number and a one-line justification they can carry into the room — that’s what gets approved.
